6 Ways Career Coaches are Adding Value with Jobscan

6 Ways Career Coaches are Adding Value with Jobscan 6 Ways Career Coaches are Adding Value with Jobscan Career coaches and employment specialists have been using Jobscans resume and LinkedIn optimization tools for years to supplement their coaching and provide mora value to their clients. We reached out to five coaches and specialists across North America to learn about the different ways theyre using Jobscan, whetzu sich it be apersonal free or Premium accountorenterprise-level Jobscan Premium or Coach accountsLise Stransky, private and contract career coach and facilitator based in Calgary, AlbertaBob McIntosh, LinkedIn and resume consultant at the Career Center of LowellRuth Kunstadter, Career and Transitions Coach at New Pathways Coaching, LLCHannah Morgan, Assistant Director of Simon Business Schools Career Management Center at the University of RochesterJen St. Pierre, Warriors to Work Specialist at Wounded Warrior ProjectI am not a resume writer, said Lise Stransky, who uses the Jobscan resume optimization tool right off the bat to ensure her clients are bringing a quality resume to the table before she gets to work. She tells her clients, I would really recommend you customize your resume before you send it to me and pay me for a review, and heres a tool to binnensee how well youve already customized it.Bob McIntosh, on the other hand, likes to utilize Jobscan to put the finishing touches on a clients resume. When we have their resume to what they think they like, I will pull up Jobscan and paste their resume as well as their job description. Thats when they can really see how successful they are in terms of keyword match and the percentage. Here are a few ways advisors are providing value to their clients and students with Jobscan1) Jobscan is a wake-up call for job seekersIts eye-opening for people, said Ruth Kunstadter. People think they have a good resume for what theyre trying to apply for, but a lot of them dont. When it comes to helping a job seeker i mprove their resume, sometimes the first step is proving to them that there is room for improvement. When a job seeker sees a Jobscan Match Report with a low rating for the first time, it can cause them to take notice. The Match Rate percentage at the top of the Match Report indicates how much work there is to be done. Jobscan recommends raising your score to 80% before applying, if possible.Usually their Match Report grades arent that great and theyre really shocked, said Lise. Shocked that their resume is so, what they would say, poor. I say, No, its not poor. Its not targeted.Whatever it takes to shift that mindset, said Hannah Morgan, because this has been going on for years where the student job seekers would send that same unmodified resume to every job without customizing it like it was 1980.2) Jobscan validates what coaches are teachingIts an eye opener because its a tool that shows them what we try to tell them, which is pick out the keywords in a job posting, said Jen St. P ierre. Thats the employers language.Career specialists have known for a long time that carefully tailoring your resume to a specific job description leads to more opportunities. Getting buy-in from clients who dont want to put work into each resume is the hard part.Jobscan really becomes an advocate for us as job coaches to show the realism of it, that were not just making this up, continued Jen. Many of us have backgrounds in recruitment. We used to write job postings so we know. Its one thing to tell somebody, its another to send them a link to a detailed report that shows it in black and white. Its a good validation in terms of what Im trying to say about tailoring resumes, said Bob.The numbers are right there, said Ruth. Its not like a person telling you that. The machine is going to look at your resume and this is what the machine is going to see. Its objective.3) Jobscan motivates and holds clients accountableBecause the resume is scored with hard numbers and objective facts, j ob seeking clients can build clear cut goals around resume improvement.Lets get that number up, Jen tells her clients. It gives them more of a challenge and a reason. She continued, I can do two or three rescans and theyll feel the pride of watching that number go up.As a Warriors to Work specialist, Jen can analyze resumes on a veterans behalf through her unlimited Jobscan Premium account. They dont have to pay, she said. Its already included in my contract. I love that I have unlimited because it gets me to teach them and have them come back for more.At the University of Rochesters Simon Business School, Hannahhas installed enterprise-level Jobscan Coach accounts for the staff advisors through Jobscans University program. Through Coach, Hannah and the other advisors are able to provide Jobscan Premium accounts to students, interact with them directly through Jobscan, and monitor their progress. This promotes accountability in the students and ensures that everyone is using the reso urces available to them.I wouldnt know how many of the students were using Jobscan if I didnt have the Coach platform, said Hannah. With Coach, Hannah can offer better direction to the advisors she works with. For example, Hannah said she might tell an advisor of an inactive student, If theyre asking to meet with you, I would expect you to find out how many jobs theyre applying to and then find out why theyre not using Jobscan because its a tool that were giving them for free and its going to make a difference.I can also see how high they have been able to get their scores in an easy visual graph, continued Hannah. It shows the different scores that theyve had when theyve uploaded their resume.4) Jobscan helps job seekers understand applicant tracking systems (ATS)One of the things I see all the time with people that Im working with in job search, they cannot understand applicant tracking systems, said Hannah. Most companies, including 98% of Fortune 500, use an ATS to manage, search , and filter applicants.I think students really still believe that recruiters are looking at every resume that comes through the applicant tracking system, Hannah continued.Instead of reading each resume, recruiters can search for resumes based on keywords, or allow their system to automatically rank applicants by comparing the resume to the job description. Because of this, coaches know that job seekers increase their chances by transferring keywords from the job description directly to their resume. Most people are shocked that technology has done this to job search and they dont quite get that a resume has to be customized and targeted every single time, said Lise.I think that Jobscan makes it super simple for anybody to understand what theyre supposed to do, concluded Hannah. The Hard Skills section of the Jobscan Match Report shows exactly which skills are missing from your resume.5) Jobscan saves time for job seekers and coaches alikeOne of the reasons I was excited to use Jobsc an at this point in the year is that students are in a mad dash to try and find jobs, said Hannah. As a result, they dont think they have time to customize their resume. Theyre afraid and dont want to miss out on the opportunity, so they just keep sending out the same old resume. We know that thats not effective, especially since these students are only using the applicant tracking system process. Jobscan gives them the tools to apply to more jobs more quickly and be a better match. The majority of the advisors and student workers who were using it said, Yeah, this is definitely going to save time for the students and for me, continued Hannah. If theyve been using Jobscan before they meet with me, I can look at a resume thats a much better version of what it should be and it makes it easier for me to analyze and help the student modify. What we used to do before we had Jobscan is type that all out in an email, because if I did it over the phone it just goes in one ear and out the othe r, said Jen. I would type it all out dont use the same action word, measurable results it would take me forever because every resume was different. Jobscan has really made me more efficient and effective in what I do. Im not having to take the time to type this all out in an email. I literally cut and paste and send them a link.6) Jobscan goes beyond ATSI really like it not just for the ATS stuff, said Ruth. It makes people reframe their view of how theyre presenting themselves and how philanthropisch eyes would view it.Focusing the resume for human readersThe process of optimizing for ATS can also make a resume read more clearly for a human recruiter.I always tell people, you need to give recruiters the 3-year-old connect-the-dots version, said Ruth. If its human eyes looking at your resume, theyre going to have between 3- and 6-seconds to decide if you meet their needs.Part of what Im doing is training them on how to approach employers and the job search process from a value propo sition point of view, said Ruth, linking themselves to the employers needs rather than bringing a three-page resume listing every single job. Its not about what they did, its about what they can do for the company. I think that using Jobscan is a really good way for them to see how theyre seen by a person looking at the resume.LinkedIn optimizationJobscan isnt just about resumes. Coaches and employment specialists can also use Jobscan to guide their clients to a more effective LinkedIn profile. Most of our students are not really embracing LinkedIn, said Hannah. Im trying to be that advocate and say, You need this tool for the rest of your career. So its gonna pay to start investing in learning how to nurture relationships and how to present yourself now. I think that LinkedIn Optimization is a phenomenal asset of Jobscan, and Im so glad that you have introduced that tool.Jobscan loves coaches. Coaches love JobscanLise Its a visual representation that a lot of people understand. Im v ery happy with it.Ruth Its so user-friendly that I dont need to walk them through the first part of it at all.Jen I just love it. It continues to get better and better. Theres just so many facets to it.Hannah Overall its helping our staff level-up.Jobscans mission is to provide the best tools for job seekers. How to handle an awkward office romance that isnt yours

How to handle an awkward amtsstube romance that isnt yoursHow to handle an awkward office romance that isnt yoursThis we know being in close proximity to someone increases the chances of attraction. And who do we spend mora time around than our coworkers? According to recent data, more than 51% of workers admit to having an office affair at some point in their career. And few of them regret it 64% of those workers admitted theyd do it again, if the opportunity presented itself. For New York career coachCarlota Zimmerman, this finding isnt surprising.Where do you spend the majority of your lifetime? The office. Why do so many people joke about having an office wife or office husband? Because of the significant time, energy and emotion invested in the workplace, she says. Even if you started your first or most recent gig in a relationship or already married, at least one point in your career, its likely youll witness a romance of some sortand hey, maybe even have feelings for someone y ourself. Our better angels may tell us to ignore it, but emotions can be unruly. How romances affect the workplaceColleagues will judge an office romance or affair based on how blatant the couple is during the workday. Zimmerman warns that an affair can trigger emotions in others that might be difficult to express. An office romance can impact other employees, by stoking their jealousy, or disgust, or amusement. Office life is, in many ways, very reminiscent of junior high when your best friend gets a boyfriend or girlfriend, suddenly they dont want to hang out as much, or if they do, they just want to talk about their crush. It can be tedious, she explains. Does it impact morale? Yes and no, Zimmerman says. What it boils down to is how much it directly impacts your ability to finish your work, meet deadlines, exceed in your career and have a harmonious workplace experience. While sometimes you should speak your truth, other times, experts recommend keeping it quiet to save face. Her e are the best ideas for a response.First, read the code of conductUnless youre in at a startup thats still in its infancy, nearly every company has a code of conduct. Youll find sexual harassment information, office rules and safety regulations, and what executives and leaders have decided about extra-curricular behavior for employees and managers. Whats in clear black-and-white can help you determine your best course of action, according to workplace expert and industrial-organizational psychology practitionerAmy Cooper Hakim. As long as company policy permits such a relationship, then it is truly none of your business, she shares. The only caveat here, Hakim explains is if the code of conduct isnt being respected in an professional, adult manner. Then, you have the right to voice your concern. This is especially true if your job is at stake. If theyre disobeying company policyAt most companies, how appropriate an affair or relationship may be comes down to one thing does one person have any direct responsibility for the other persons career? An executive dating a just-out-of-college intern, or a manager dating someone they evaluate daily is aleidher story, Zimmerman says. Then the office romance infringes on issues of power and money, and quickly lead to chaos. If because of all the fun these crazy kids are having, deadlines arent being met, or office credit cards are being used to rent hotels and go on unnecessary business trips. In that sense, you see things spiraling out of control, she explains. You might even notice his poor work management is causing the business to lose the clients that pay for those restaurants. That can definitely impact you, since if the company goes under, there goes your job.In addition, its not uncommon that someone who is having an office romance can become a favorite and lead to bad team dynamics, or receive promotions theyre not entirely qualified for. In addition, anyone who crosses the favorite can feel punished in their caree r paths. That kind of toxic protection can become a major problem, and its what gives office relationships a bad name. Thats when you should try to say something, because the impact on others can be destructive.Just like youd extend an olive branch to a friend to clean up their act before you bad-talked them to another friend, Zimmerman says talking to the couple directly before you go to HR is a kind-hearted move. You have a responsibility to politely but clearly make it clear to the parties involved, that they need to take it down a notch. I would probably speak first to the person whom you have some kind of friendly relationship. In many cases, just the realization that they arent as slick as they think, and that everyone knows is enough to throw a damper on things, she suggests. If they blow you off? Or it keeps getting worse? Thats when you speak to a professional, just make sure you come prepared with proof, including specific receipts, dates and examples to back up your reason s for being upset or concerned. If theyre not breaking the rulesZimmerman warns that if the affair is merely bugging you, and not really changing your workflow, its better to keep your thoughts to yourself. Even if you think its clear they have a little somethin somethin going on, assumptions can be dangerous- not only to their reputation but yours, too. She gives the personal example of when she welches ending her tenure in network news. She was very close with a colleague - and perhaps, even a little flirty - but they never extended the relationship past the office. We made each other laugh, he sent me flowers, I gave him little treats. But nothing ever happened. However, another producer, who actively disliked both us, was apparently so morally shocked, shocked and outraged, that she took it upon herself to lodge a formal complaint with HR. She complained about how friendly we were, and that it set a bad example for the rest of the team, she shared. That producer was fired. Wit hin days of meeting with HR, she was quite publicly escorted out the door. She was already unpopular, and HR used her complaint as an opportunity to clean house. Though her experience was on the extreme case, staying out of the chaos is usually the best bet, especially if your resume isnt in jeopardy. Remember that you dont need to be friends with everyone at work, but you do need to have a professional relationship. If you are not comfortable with the office romance, make sure to still remain polite and respectful when interacting with the couple at work, Hakim says..bxc.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-group-1012255-lyDBLV9 width 900pxheight 550pxWould you ever consider an office romance? It doesnt have to be that way - especially when youre sprucing up your profile for a job hunt while youre still employed. To check your settings when it comes to updating your profile, click Settings Privacy, then Privacy, then Sharing Profile Edits. You have the option to choose No.The same goes for checking out other users profiles (for work purposes, of course). To check your settings when it comes to who can see youve viewed their profile, click Settings Privacy, then Privacy, then Profile Viewing Options. From there, you can cho ose if you want Your name and headline to pop up in the other persons notifications, Private profile characteristics, or Private mode.Using it as a dating siteNo, no, no. 3 Resume Updates You Should Make Each Month - The Muse

3 Resume Updates You Should Make Each Month - The Muse3 Resume Updates You Should Make Each MonthThe logic behind updating your resume is a bit of a riddle. Unless youre actively sending out applications, youll put off revising it until tomorrow. But all too often, great opportunities appear unexpectedly, and youll wish youd edited it yesterday.Thats because you might not be consciously looking for a new job, but then you landsee an amazing opening (with a fast-approaching application deadline). Or, youre invited to join a panel or connect over email with a prestigious contact, and you need to attach your resume. And your heart sinks a bit as you realize you havent even opened it since you landed your last position over a year ago.So, you set out to update it in a hurry, accepting that youll have no time to adjust how its organized, or even to send it to a friend for proofreading. The best you can do is try to see if theres anything major you should add (like a new side gig or volunt eer role), but otherwise you leave it pretty much as is. Sure, thats not the worst thing in the world, but theres a better way.The trick is to spend a few minutes each month making sure your resume is up to date. Im not suggesting you overhaul it every four weeks Seriously, youll drive yourself crazy Instead, Im suggesting a line here or there and then reading it out loud. By making these three updates each month, youll be 100% prepared the next time some great opportunity comes along.1. Add New RolesMost people update their resume when theyre looking for a new position- and then let it lie dormant until the next job search. It makes sense in that you cant really abflug editing as soon as you accept an offer, because who knows how closely the role will mimic the position description. But, you could probably go ahead and update it starting after a month. Begin by adding the company, position title, and your start date. The next month, add a few main responsibilities. Should a cool ne tworking, publishing, or presentation opportunity come along, youll have a starting point. This goes for volunteer positions, side projects, and post-graduate internships too. Even a title and a couple of lines will give you a skeleton so you could update your resume much faster in a pinch- and be sure youre not forgetting anything.2. Update Your ImpactOnce you have all your current positions listed, take a few minutes each month to consider if theyre up to date. This goes for big things like if your title or primary responsibilities change, but also for things like adding new projects. In her article, Three Ways to Make Sure Your Bullet Points Will Impress Recruiters Muse writer Lily Zhang saysSimply put, did you make something better? Maybe you saved time and money on a project or created something all new that your team sorely needed. The idea here is that you didnt just up the head count at your company, you solved problemsTo really highlight the impact you made, use numbers- thi nk, cut processing time down by 3 days, or designed and implemented new interface, improving employee efficiency by 30%. Naturally, youll be better able to recall the results of your latest project the month you did it- as opposed to six months from now. So, if you spearheaded a website redesign or hit a major sales goal, add that bullet point. (You can always go back later and cut it off it its no longer relevant or add long-term impact.) But for now, youll be sure this selling point is on your resume3. Double Check the DetailsAnytime you make a change, you want to check your resume is still in top form. So, set aside a few minutes each month for proofreading. If you restated your work in a prior position, check the verbs are still in past tense. Add something to a new role? Check that the verbs are in present tense.Look for consistency across what may seem like minor details Either all bullets should end with periods, or none should. Similarly, the month for all employment dates s hould be spelled out, abbreviated, or listed as a number not some mixture of all three. Headings like Experience, Education, and Skills should have standardized formatting- either theyre all in caps, or emphasized with an underline, or theyre all not.Next time a cool opportunity comes along- whether its to throw your hat in the ring for a new job or consulting opportunity, to speak at event, or just to attach your resume to an email, youll be able to feel confident. You wont have to worry if it really reflects what youve been up to you, because youll have been updating it all along.
